Freight has a season, and most people importing at small scale do not find out until the year they get caught by it.

From roughly September, the world starts shipping for Christmas. American and European retailers book capacity months ahead and at volumes that dwarf anything a small importer moves. Airlines and shipping lines allocate space accordingly. Everybody else queues.

What changes

Rates

Air freight pricing responds to demand quickly. The same route in a quiet March and a busy November are meaningfully different prices, and the difference is not small.

This is one reason nobody credible publishes a fixed per-kilo rate to Nigeria. A rate card written in June is describing a market that no longer exists in October.

Space

More consequential than price. In a quiet month a consolidated shipment books quickly. In peak season it waits for space, and the shipment that would have gone Tuesday goes the following Monday.

Supplier lead times

Factories are also busiest now, filling orders for every market at once. The supplier who normally ships in two days takes five. Made-to-order items stretch further.

Customs volume

More cargo arriving means more to process. Clearance that took two days takes four.

None of these individually is dramatic. Stacked, they turn a two to four week window into three to six.

The Nigerian version of the calendar

Nigeria adds its own layer on top of the global one. December in Nigeria is not a quiet month. It is the loudest retail month of the year, and the goods for it have to be in the country well before it starts.

Month What is happening What to do
July, August Quiet globally. Rates reasonable, space available. Order festive stock now. Genuinely.
September Peak begins. Rates start moving. Last comfortable window for December stock.
October Busy. Bookings slower. Final realistic order date for December delivery.
November Peak. Rates high, space tight. Anything ordered now is January stock. Plan accordingly.
December Selling month. Freight still congested. Sell what you have. Order Q1 and Valentine’s stock.
January Chinese New Year approaching or arriving. A different problem entirely.

The two hardest constraints in the import year sit next to each other. Peak season runs into Chinese New Year with barely a gap. Which is why January and February are difficult months to source into.

The October deadline

If there is one date worth writing down, it is this.

Work backwards. You want stock selling by the first week of December, because December buying in Nigeria starts early and peaks well before the 25th. Allow a week for it to reach you from the Lagos hub and be photographed and listed. That puts arrival at late November.

Subtract a peak season window of four to six weeks, and you are ordering in the middle of October at the latest. Add a safety buffer and it is early October.

Every year, sellers order in early November for December and spend the month refreshing tracking. The full December calendar is here.

How to plan around it

Order earlier, not more

The instinct under time pressure is to order bigger. The correct response is to order sooner. Ordering twice as much in November does not make it arrive faster, it just parks more of your capital in the same queue.

Prefer suppliers who hold stock

In peak season the difference between a supplier holding inventory and one producing to order is a week or more. Ask before ordering, and prefer the ones who can ship immediately even at a slightly higher price.

Split the order

If you cannot get everything early, split it. Your proven best sellers early, your experimental items later. Then a delay hits the items you can afford to be late on.

Buy dense

Space is what is scarce in peak season, and volumetric weight is what you are charged on. A denser order is both cheaper and easier to fit into a constrained shipment. The formula.

Tell customers before they ask

If you are running pre-orders through peak season, say the window is longer. Customers accept a stated constraint and resent a discovered one.

What peak season does not change

Worth saying, because peak season becomes an excuse for things it does not cause.

It does not change duty rates. It does not change what customs decides about your goods. It does not make a supplier’s out of stock item appear. And it does not justify a two month silence, because the stages still exist and somebody can still tell you which one your order is on. Where the days actually go.

The quiet season nobody uses

The flip side of all this is that March through July is genuinely the easiest time to import. Rates are calmer, space is available, factories are not overloaded, and lead times behave.

Almost nobody plans around this. Sellers order when they feel the demand, which is late, rather than when the freight is cheap and fast, which is early.

The operators who do well in December are the ones who ordered in August. It is not a clever trick. It is just a calendar, used on purpose.

What tightens, and in what order

Peak season is not one constraint, it is four arriving in sequence, and knowing the order helps you plan around it.

When What tightens first
Late August Factory lead times. They are filling orders for every market at once
September Air cargo rates begin moving. Space still available
October Space. Bookings that took a day take three
November Everything. Rates at their highest, space scarce, customs volumes up
December Still congested, plus Nigerian holiday road conditions

The useful observation is that factory lead times tighten before freight does. So an order placed in late August is already slower at the supplier stage, before it meets any of the freight constraints. That is why ordering in July feels absurdly early and is not. Where each stage sits.

How to buy into peak season

Five decisions, made in July or August rather than in October.

Order earlier rather than larger. A bigger order in November does not arrive faster, it just parks more capital in the same queue.

Prefer stocked goods over made-to-order. The gap between the two widens considerably in peak season, and it is worth paying slightly more for a supplier who can ship immediately.

Split the order by urgency. Proven sellers early, experiments later, so a delay lands on the items you can afford to be late on.

Buy dense. Space is what is scarce, so a denser order is both cheaper and easier to fit into a constrained shipment. Why volume is the charge.

Confirm stock in writing before paying. Suppliers overcommit in busy periods, and a written confirmation is what you point at when they do.

The quiet season nobody books

The other half of the argument, and the one that is genuinely actionable.

March through July is the easiest window of the year. Rates are calmer, space is available, factories are not overloaded, and lead times behave.

Almost nobody plans around it, because sellers order when demand appears rather than when supply is good.

Two things a disciplined seller does with it:

Buy the festive range early. Ordering December stock in July costs less in freight, arrives without drama, and leaves October free.

Buy counter-seasonally. Rain gear in December, dry season goods during the rains. Low demand means better prices and faster shipping, at the cost of holding stock. Whether your cash can carry it.

The operators who look calm in December are not better at freight. They ordered in August.

Questions people ask

When is peak shipping season from China?

Roughly September through December, driven by global retailers stocking for Christmas. Capacity tightens, rates rise, and lead times stretch across the whole period.

How much longer does shipping take in peak season?

Commonly one to two weeks longer than a quiet month, stacked across supplier lead times, booking delays and slower clearance. A two to four week window can become three to six.

When should I order stock for December in Nigeria?

By early to mid October at the latest, and August or September is better. December selling in Nigeria starts well before the 25th, so goods need to land in November.

Does freight cost more in peak season?

Yes. Air freight rates respond quickly to demand, and the gap between a quiet month and a peak month is significant. This is one reason fixed published rate cards are unreliable.

Is it better to order less or order earlier in peak season?

Earlier. Ordering a larger quantity late does not move it faster and ties up more capital in the same queue.

What is the best time of year to import from China?

March through July. Rates are calmer, space is available and factories are not overloaded. Most sellers order when demand appears rather than when freight is cheap, which is the wrong way round.
